Thursday Thirteen #3

Thirteen Things about where I (Mark Caldwell) get too many ideas

  1. Cutting the grass with my hands are full of gardening implements so I can't write them down
  2. Reading magazines especially New Scientist, history magazines and back issues of New Internationalist
  3. Overheard snatches of conversations on the bus, in a bar, in a cue or anywhere else people talk loudly in public
  4. On long train journeys and especially waiting for connecting trains at Crew station
  5. Talking to friends
  6. Walking to work
  7. Looking at pictures cut from newspapers and magazines that I filed away for years and forgotten then pulled out and rumaged through to deliberately kick an idea off
  8. Watching real clouds and rendering random Vue atmospheres
  9. Reference and history books
  10. The BBC news and Wikipedia web sites
  11. Doing the washing up which is as annoying as when cutting grass because my hands are wet making it a fuss to write them down
  12. While I'm sleeping
  13. When I'm trying to work on an idea I'd already had

I get loads of ideas in restaurants - people talk much too loudly, especially on cellphones.

I agree. I seem to get great ideas while driving or sleeping... I hate that.

Would you believe, some of my best story and essay ideas come to me in the shower? Even my tape recorder will not work there!

Great list! I get mine while walking on the treadmill or #7 like you.

Thomma Lyn said...

LOL! Talk about minds in sync this Thursday. Neat-o that we had such similar ideas for TT! I enjoyed reading your list.

Happy TT, and thanks for visiting my blog!

Sounds like your brain doesn't turn off. I understand what a curse that can be...

Happy TT!

I dream the next plots from my book. Well, basic plots, I don't add all the surreal stuff.

Car rides in the country will have me jumping for my pen and note book.

Happy TT, mine's up.

I'm with you on #12 and #13. Great list.

all great places...I think it's easy when your mind can wander!

Driving, sleeping, taking long journeys (train or walking or passenger in a car, etc) where I don't have to watch the road... the Muse speaks whenever she feels like it!

Seems we are all birds of a feather.

Joan said...

I hate when that happens! Of course, even worse it writing the ideas down and losing the notes before you get anything written from them. My TT is also posted.

Di said...

I just wish I had as many hours as I had ideas! There are so many ideas that I don't get to act on.

Denise Patrick said...

I get loads of ideas from watching the news, and sometimes they come to me when I'm asleep and when I wake up - poof! - I can't remember any of it.

Barbara said...

I get lots of ideas driving, and can't write them down. Bought a small recorder just for that, only forget to take it with me!

Check out my TT

Wylie Kinson said...

I get most of mine in that fuzzy state between awake and sleep. Sadly, by morning, I can't remember them anymore :(

Rose said...

I get great ideas just before I go to skeep.

Rose said...

Opps that should have been sleep. lol

Tilly Greene said...

All of them viable and good because you can't write them down to help you remember all the finite detail you discovered :-) I wonder if you were prepared for them if they'd be as good as they are when you aren't? Hmmm.

PJ said...

I get ideas on the bus/train, but I hate writing on public transport as I always catch people reading over my shoulder, which makes me rather self-conscious.

Happy TT!

Red said...

I also suffer from too many ideas!

Nancy Lindquist-Liedel said...

I get lots of those middle of the night ideas. I think I'm going to remember them in the am, and poof! They're gone. I should write them down, but I really think I'm going to remember them.

Christie said...

i get a lot of ideas while getting ready, (in the shower or while drying my hair). weird, i know. but i find inspiration sometimes in the some of the most interesting places too, i am always on the lookout.

Ash said...

I so know the feeling. Great list, happy TT

Kai said...

Great list! I'm the same - I always remember something or think of something I need to do when I'm not able to write it down. I think 'it's ok - I'll never forget THAT.' And then, of course, I do! :-)

Toni said...

Great! My best ideas come when I'm driving! Not the best time either!

Thanks for visiting my list!

I get lots of ideas while I'm driving. Great ideas for inspiration.
Happy Thursday!

Arlene said...

You're so funny! It sounds like you have ADD ;-)
I played too :-)

Michelle Pillow said...

Great list :) I always get mine when trying to fall asleep. Some random thought pops into my head and won't shut up until I write it down.

Thanks for stopping by,
Michelle

Thanks for your help... or not. Maybe I'll try some of your ideas places myself x

What's this? TT bloghop has led me the playground of an illustrator? Wahoo! Must go save link to favs. Oh - and i didn't see toilet listed anywhere for place to get ideas. Come on - everyone knows brain leaks occur in there where pen and paper aren't handy!

Ps - Susan and Wylie - you're SUPPOSED to clue me in on cool artist sites.

laughing mommy said...

I always get ideas when i wake up in the middle of the night and i'm too sleepy to write them down, or in the shower when i can't write either.

leigh said...

I get mine driving to work.

Christine said...

I get some of my best ideas gardening or mowing the lawn. I totally space out and go into my head. My neighbours think I'm nuts because I use a regular lawn mower to cut my two acer lawn. :)

Ctina said...

When I'm trying to fall asleep! haha! Great list!

YellowRose said...

I come up with ideas when I am trying to go to sleep, then I can't go to sleep, so I have to get up and write the ideas down. It's frustrating!

Thanks for stopping by my TT!

I used to be a huge fan of New Scientist, but just don't have the time any more. Although I do pop by their site every now and then.

Happy T13

Sophisticated Writer said...

I get mine while walking (and always happen to have no pen and paper in sight *Ugh*).

Also while sleeping and watching TV :)

And by the way, Mark, "The Mission" which I talked about on my TT post is the movie, not the band. I was talking about the soundtrack of this movie. Thought I'd tell you that :D

Your list is precisely why I carry a small digital recorder around with me all the time. Fits in my pocket and can be turned on very easily. Comes in very handy when I want to "jot down" an idea and don't have time, hands, paper, etc.
